At a time when they should have been cherishing moments like their three-month old’s first smiles, Helen’s family was instead faced with a diagnosis of Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL).

Helen’s lovingly prepared nursery sat dark and empty, and she was placed in a hospital for 10 long months.  Her family was thrust into a new world of hospital stays, clinic visits, weekly chemo and steroid treatments, side effects and a looming, unspoken terror – the possibility of losing their little girl.

“The comfort and emotional support was the most beneficial thing BCFM did for my family,” Helen’s mom remembers. “Providing empathy for others during a difficult time is one way to better understand what someone is going through.”

Now, a year and a half later, Helen and her family are at home and healthy!
