Internship Opportunities

The Blood Cancer Foundation of Michigan (BCFM) is a state-wide nonprofit organization whose mission is to ensure the emotional, social and financial stability of Michigan patients and families as they navigate their blood cancer journey.

As we continue to grow, with limited resources, and strive to meet patients’ and family members’ emotional, social and financial needs, interns are critical to our success. BCFM is seeking interns who are interested in learning and supporting all aspects of our organization (specifically our fundraising and marketing efforts), as well as those looking for field placement opportunities in social work.

PATIENT SUPPORT INTERN

For Master’s level students preparing to enter the social work profession, Patient Support interns obtain a hands-on learning experience, working collaboratively as a part of BCFM’s Patient Support team to wrap a blanket of care around adults and children facing blood cancer. Interns will learn how to support a vulnerable population and provide them with resources, as well as how to develop various programs, manage aspects of fundraising and plan events

Sample Patient Support Responsibilities: Work with Patient Support Specialists to provide disease related information and education, emotional support, and financial assistance to BCFM patients and family members; support BCFM patient and fundraising events; conduct outreach to hospitals, cancer centers, and community agencies.

Our Patient Support department obtains students from MSW programs at accredited universities in the state of Michigan. If you’d like to intern in this department, please contact your university field placement liaison.

DEVELOPMENT & MARKETING INTERN

Want to make the community a better place while getting hands-on work experience? For college students interested in the non-profit sector, BCFM integrates Development & Marketing interns into the day-to-day operations of the agency – from fund development and marketing to event planning and community outreach. Training is provided, as well as cross-group conversations, and more opportunities to both learn about the reality and complexity of non-profit work and support BCFM’s engagement programs.

Sample Development Responsibilities: Support BCFM’s Development team in securing the resources needed to expand and sustain BCFM’s programs and services, while engaging and appreciating the community of supporters who help us reach over 3,200 patients and family members. Assist with grant seeking, donor/community/sponsorship outreach, prospect research, event planning, communications, donor stewardship projects, and associated administrative tasks. Assignments may include researching foundations, drafting communications materials to donors, phone and email outreach, and supporting plans and preparations for various fundraisers.

Sample Marketing Responsibilities: Work with the Associate Director of Communications to build a community and tell the story of BCFM’s mission. Assist with the development of communication/engagement campaigns and content that builds awareness and drives fundraising initiatives; management of BCFM website, social media, and e-marketing efforts; copy-writing, story-telling, brand management and entrepreneurship; serve as a brand ambassador for BCFM.
