CLF Recognizes Blood-Cancer Awareness Month

Farmington Hills., Mich. (September 10, 2018) – September is blood-cancer awareness month, a perfect time to discuss the need for emotional, social and financial support for patients and caregivers dealing with leukemia, lymphoma or other blood-related disorders. Children's Leukemia Foundation of Michigan (CLF) is working to meet this need by providing compassionate, personalized support to Michigan children, adults and families affected by these diseases.

Since 1952, CLF has helped patients maintain their quality of life while dealing blood cancer. Currently, CLF helps more than 3,400 patients throughout the state of Michigan. There is a growing need, however, as more than 3,000 patients have already been diagnosed this year. All CLF services are free-of-charge, including:

Disease Information and Resources

  • Stepping Stones, a CLF resource kit for new patients.
  • Access to a Resource Library, which includes diagnosis and disease information, and additional resources for emotional and financial support.
  • Referral services to connect patients with additional agencies or resources.

Emotional Support

  • Case Management to assess the unique needs of each patient and to create a personalized plan to help get them through treatment while maintaining their quality of life.
  • Ongoing phone calls and meetings with a Patient Services Coordinator (PSC), who is professionally educated and trained to find solutions that provide support during difficult times.
  • Interactive workshops and support groups.

Financial Support

  • Patient Reimbursement Fund to help cover the costs of prescriptions, transportation and wigs/head coverings.
  • Special Needs Grant, a one-time grant to help cover unexpected life expenses, such as car repairs, utility shut-off notices, etc.
  • Holiday toys for children (18 and under) of adult patients.
  • Holiday meal assistance for families who cannot otherwise afford a holiday meal.

Events and Opportunities for Fun

  • Recreation events for the family, including holiday parties (e.g., Valentine’s Day, Halloween, Holiday Toys Open House).
  • Ticketed events (e.g., sporting events).
  • Family outings (e.g., bowling, ice skating, dinner).

“A blood cancer diagnosis can be devastating on its own, but what is sometimes forgotten is the emotional and financial burden placed on patients and caregivers dealing with a serious illness,” said Heidi Grix, president, and CEO, Children's Leukemia Foundation of Michigan. “Our goal is to help ease this burden by providing the necessary support to allow our patients to focus on treatment and getting better.”

Any Michigan resident diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or a blood related disorder is encouraged to contact CLF to determine whether they qualify for enrollment. There are no age limits or income restrictions and services are free of charge. Interested patients may call 800.825.2536 or visit leukemiamichigan.org for more information.

Children’s Leukemia Foundation of Michigan also welcomes volunteers and donations to help support its mission of educating, supporting, empowering and inspiring its patients to believe they can be survivors. Donations can be made online at leukemiamichigan.org.
